|MARY ELIZABETH CHASTAIN CORDES|
|Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Eugina Smith Chastain Murry Harrison, was born on September 3, 1888, in Gainsville, Georgia. She moved west in 1904 and eventually settled in Mayer, where she met Charles Henry Cordes on a blind date. |
Mary and Charles were married on May 5, 1908, in Prescott, Arizona Territory, and had seven children: Henry Edward, born July 16, 1909; Raymond Chastain, born Jan. 26, 1922; Ruby Eugenia Warren McGee, born December 30, 1912; Edna Vivian Warren, born Feb. 9, 1917; baby Cordes, born May 1, 1919, who died in infancy; Warren Oscar, born March 22, 1922; and Calvin Chester, born Dec. 15, 1926.
Charles had been in the sheep business but decided he couldn't run sheep and have a wife, too, so he took over his father's business in the town of Cordes. Charles and Mary carried on the Cordes' tradition of prosperity splendidly, built a brand new store in 1910 complete with groceries, a saloon and warehouse.
In addition to being wife, mother, homemaker and helpmate, Mary was active in the Methodist Church and the Ladies Aid Society of Mayer, Arizona. She died on October 26, 1964, and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
