| Vegetable Varieties

The current vegetable
garden is a test plot to give visitors an idea of the types of vegetables available to
people in the last half of the nineteenth century. All varieties we grow were
introduced in the United States prior to 1886. When possible, the earliest
introduced varieties are planted. Little is known of the varieties grown in Yavapai County prior to 1900. There are newspaper references to specific vegetables being raised locally, but they are only listed by their common names. As with pioneer gardens, this one is fertilized with composte and hand weeded. When insect infestation becomes a problem, organic methods are used to treat it. Not all nineteenth century remedies are safe, but those that are become the treatment of choice. |
