The Governor's Mansion

STABILIZING THE MANSION

Log cabins are temporary buildings at best. Foundation logs laid on the ground invite rot and termites. Water trapped between outer logs promotes decay. Outside walls sink more than inner walls, causing stresses in rafters and beams. Because of such problems, it has been necessary to stabilize the Governor's Mansion in several ways. You may see some of the reinforcements and changes. Steel I-beams to take up the weight of the roof and the ceiling. Steel rods to pull up sagging ceiling beams. Modern foundation of concrete and cinder block faced with native granite. Rotted foundation logs: removed in 1980. Dirt between logs which was sifted for artifacts.
