The table in the corner is a reproduction of one made in Colorado in the 1860s. On it sits a collection of objects from the 1860s suggesting a man in the process of writing. These include an open lap desk, open barrel style traveling inkwell, a mother of pearl pen holer with pen, a large tin cup and coffee pot, a hard rubber match holder, a small notebook, a candlestick and candle lantern for illumination. The chair is a typical frontier ladder back style with woven rawhide seat.

Sitting on the top is a letter press, also called a book press. It was used to make copies of letters by damping the original letter and transferring some of the ink to a piece of tissue paper. The copy would have to be read from the opposite side thus requiring tissue paper as the copy paper.
