Sharlot As a Writer and
Poet
In 1891 Sharlot sold her first story, THE GENESIS OF THE EARTH AND MOON (A Moqui
Folk-Tale), for four dollars. For the rest of her life writing was
both her profession and passion. Her poetry, particularly, expressed
her deepest emotions: grief over loss of love, admiration for Arizona
and its history, and indignation over the inequality of women.
She found continual joy in telling a good story.
Sharlot published over 500 articles, stories and poems. 10 books bear
her name as author. She is best known for her two collections of poetry:
"Cactus and Pine," published in 1910 and "Poems of a
Ranch Woman," published after her death.
