One of the premier Native American art markets in the southwest, PIAM features both traditional and contemporary works of art, including distinctive jewelry, exquisite ceramics, sculpture, hand-woven baskets and blankets. An all-Indian artist jury chooses participants on the basis of quality in both traditional and contemporary styles. Attendees stroll among demonstrations of American Indian weaving, Katsina carving, silversmithing, and the making of baskets. Folk Music Festival, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The charm and exuberance of Arizona folk music pervade the shade-covered grounds of Sharlot Hall Museum on Oct. 2-3 for the Museum’s annual Folk Music Festival, Arizona’s oldest continual folk-music festival. The event features more than 100 of the state’s best folk-music performers delivering a wide range of folk-music styles on four sound stages. The Folk Music Festival is renowned for its impromptu jam sessions featuring musicians from different groups and styles mixing and mingling with visitors. The family-friendly event also features musical acts for the kids. Further enhancing the proceedings are music workshops, an instrument swap meet and the ever-popular band scramble.
