Sharlot Hall Museum Continues 80th Anniversary Celebration

with Award of Two Proclamations

2008 marks 80 years since Sharlot Hall opened the doors of Prescott’s Territorial Governor’s Mansion to offer her expansive collection of Central Arizona pioneer and American Indian artifacts for public viewing. Since June 11, 1928, the Sharlot Hall Museum has grown into a four-acre campus of historic buildings, exhibits, beautiful grounds, a theater, and prestigious library and archive. Thousands of people have visited since opening day, and the Museum remains one of the most unique visitor experiences in Arizona, offering summer heritage festivals and a living history program.

As part of a year-long celebration of the Museum’s 80 years, both the State of Arizona and City of Prescott have bestowed proclamations. Governor Janet Napolitano recognized Sharlot Hall Museum as “a state treasure.” It is often called the “crown jewel of Prescott.”

Jack D. Wilson, Mayor of the City of Prescott, proclaimed June 11, 2008, as “Sharlot Hall Museum 80th Anniversary Day.” Jody Drake, who is known throughout Arizona as the personification of Sharlot Hall, accepted the award during a recent City Council meeting.

The 80th anniversary celebration will continue through Spring of 2009, and culminate with the Museum hosting the Arizona Historical Society’s 50th Annual Arizona History Convention.
